What’s Esprit de Corps?

Yes, apparently it’s French word week here at MtM.

In our MtM podcast on “How to Build a Museum”, architect David Greenbaum called “esprit de corps” a must-have for every project team.

But what is it?

“Esprit de corps” [esspree duh core] literally means “group spirit”. It is the unity, loyalty, and camaraderie among team members. It applies to military units, sports teams — and groups developing exhibitions.

Here’s what this powerful force can do:

1. Increased morale: a sense of camaraderie and belonging.

2. Improved teamwork: members want to help each other.

3. Enhanced loyalty: the team stays committed to group values.

4. Greater resilience: a collective spirit helps weather setbacks, including financial ones.

5. Higher productivity: supportive environments make teams efficient.

6. Better retention: we stay with groups we feel connected to.

7. Better reputation: teams with it are known for it.

Best of all? It’s free. It’s not a tool you buy. It’s a feeling you cultivate.

Here’s the thing:
For teams, esprit de corps can be just as productive as calendars, spreadsheets, and drawing packages.

Now, how can we cultivate it? Watch this space for more.

Warmly,
Jonathan
